Yes, water eject works for what it’s built to do: clear water sitting in your phone’s speaker grille. A low 165 Hz tone makes the speaker pump air, and that air pushes droplets out through the holes.
What it can’t do is reach water in the charging port or inside the phone.
We build Water Eject, a free tool for exactly this, so we’d love to say it fixes everything. It doesn’t. Here’s exactly what it does, what it can’t do, and how to tell whether it worked on your phone.

How does water eject work?
Your speaker is a tiny drum with a mesh in front of it. When water sits in that mesh, sound gets trapped and everything comes out muffled.
A low note makes the speaker membrane move the furthest. Each push of air shoves droplets toward the holes, and at full volume they’re thrown out of the grille.
It’s not a hack. Apple builds the same idea into Apple Watch: its Water Lock feature plays a series of tones to clear water from the watch speaker. iPhone simply doesn’t have a button for it.
What can water eject fix, and what can’t it?
It’s a speaker tool, so it helps where the speaker can push air:
- Muffled or quiet sound after rain, a splash or a quick dip.
- Crackling or buzzing caused by droplets sitting in the mesh.
- The earpiece at the top, if you run it once with that edge facing down.
And it can’t help with these, no matter how long it plays:
- “Liquid Detected” in the charging port. No sound reaches the port. Our Liquid Detected guide covers the fix.
- Water inside the phone, behind the seals. That needs time to dry, or a repair.
- A speaker that was already damaged, or packed lint and dust. Those need a brush or a service visit.
How do you know it worked?
You’ll usually hear it, and often see it. Droplets tend to appear on the grille while the tone plays, and the buzz gets cleaner as they leave.
After a run, wipe the grille and play a song you know well. If it sounds clear at normal volume, you’re done.
Still quiet or crackly after two or three runs and a few hours of drying? The problem may not be water at all. We break down the other causes in why a phone speaker sounds low or muffled.
Does water eject work on iPhone, Android and AirPods?
On iPhone, yes. There’s no built-in version, so you use a web tool or a shortcut. Most iPhones also play sound through the earpiece, so run it once with each edge down. Our step-by-step water eject guide shows the full routine.
On Android and Samsung, yes, in Chrome or Samsung Internet. The speaker works the same way.
On AirPods, it can help with droplets in the mesh, at half volume and out of your ears. Drying comes first, though: see what to do when AirPods get wet.
Does the water eject shortcut actually work?
Yes. A shortcut plays the same kind of low tone through the same speaker, so it works the same way.
The difference is convenience. A shortcut runs from a tap on the back of your iPhone, while a web tool works on any phone with nothing to set up.
Building it yourself also answers the “is it safe?” question, because you can see every action. Our Water Eject shortcut guide walks you through it in four actions.
Is water eject safe for your speaker?
Yes, at normal use. The tone plays through your phone’s regular audio path, at levels the speaker is built for, the same as loud music.
Keep each run to a minute or less and give the phone a short break between runs. If you hear harsh distortion that doesn’t fade as the water clears, stop and let the phone dry.
Is the water eject app free?
The tool on watereject.live is free and runs in your browser. Our iPhone app, Water Eject x Speaker Cleaner, is free to download with an optional Pro upgrade, and adds vibration plus a left and right speaker test.
We compare it with the alternatives in the best water eject apps.
Want vibration too? Our iPhone app, Water Eject x Speaker Cleaner, pairs the sound with vibration to shake more water loose, and tests your left and right speakers separately.

Frequently asked questions
Does water eject work on the charging port?
No. Sound comes out of the speaker, and the charging port has no speaker in it. Unplug, tap the phone gently with the port facing down, and let it dry.
Can water eject fix water damage?
It clears water from the speaker grille, which is often all that’s wrong after a splash. It can’t repair parts that water has already damaged inside the phone.
How long does water eject take to work?
One 30-second run clears most splashes. For stubborn water, follow with a 60-second run of a different sound, then rest the phone speaker-down for a few minutes.
Why does the sound crackle while it plays?
That’s usually the water itself, vibrating in the mesh. The crackle should fade as droplets leave. If it never changes, stop and let the phone air-dry first.
Does water eject work if my phone fell in a pool?
For the speaker, yes, once you’ve dried the outside. A full dip needs more than sound: start with our steps for a phone that fell in water.
