Wait at least 5 hours before charging a wet iPhone with a cable, which is what Apple recommends. If you see a “Liquid Detected” alert, try again after 30 minutes, but the port can take up to 24 hours to dry fully.
You want to know when it’s safe to charge, turn it back on, or stop worrying. Here’s the timeline, step by step, using what the phone makers actually say.

How long should a phone dry after water?
It depends on what you want to do next. The waits are different for using it, charging it and calling it fully dry:
| When | What’s safe |
|---|---|
| First minutes | Wipe it, tap out the ports, open speakers |
| 30 minutes | Retry charging after “Liquid Detected” |
| 5 hours | Cable charging an iPhone, per Apple |
| 24 hours | Port fully dry in the slowest cases |
Apple’s 5-hour rule comes from its water resistance page for iPhone, which says to “allow at least 5 hours before charging with a Lightning or USB-C cable.”
The 30-minute and 24-hour numbers come from Apple’s Liquid Detected support page, for when your iPhone blocks charging to protect the port. Our Liquid Detected guide explains that alert in full.
How should you dry it in the meantime?
Air and gravity do the work. Follow these in order:
- Wipe it down with a soft, lint-free cloth and take the case off.
- Tap out the ports. Hold the phone with the charging port facing down and tap it gently against your hand.
- Clear the speaker. A low tone from a speaker cleaner pushes water out of the grille, so you can hear properly again. See how to eject water from your phone.
- Leave it somewhere dry with some airflow, like near a fan on a cool setting. Lay it speaker-down.
- Wait out the timeline above before cable charging.
Google gives Pixel owners the same short list: lift it out, turn it off, dry it with a soft cloth, then let it finish drying at room temperature.
How long should you leave your phone in rice?
Zero hours. Skip the rice. Apple’s support page says plainly: “Don’t put your iPhone in a bag of rice.” Small rice particles can get inside the phone and damage it.
Rice also doesn’t pull water out of a phone any faster than open air. Meanwhile the phone sits sealed in a bag, with no airflow at all.
- No rice, for the reasons above.
- No hair dryer, oven or radiator. Apple warns against any external heat source.
- No compressed air or cotton swabs. Both can push water deeper.
- No charging early. Charging a wet port can corrode the pins.
Can you use your phone while it dries?
Light use is usually fine on a water-resistant phone, as long as it’s working normally. Leave the charging port unplugged and keep headphones out of the jack until everything is dry.
If you need power urgently, Apple allows a Qi wireless charger once the back of the iPhone is dry.
What if it’s still not right after 24 hours?
Time fixes a wet port. It doesn’t fix damage. Book a repair, and check what it costs in your country, if after a full day of drying:
- The phone won’t turn on or keeps restarting.
- The screen has spots, lines or flicker.
- The speaker still sounds distorted after clearing it.
- “Liquid Detected” appears with every cable you try.

Frequently asked questions
How long should I leave my phone off after dropping it in water?
Turning it off is a sensible first step: Google advises it for Pixel phones. Leave it off while the outside and ports dry, then turn it on and check that everything works.
Is 30 minutes enough before charging?
For retrying after a “Liquid Detected” alert, yes. For cable charging a wet iPhone, Apple says to wait at least 5 hours. When in doubt, wait longer.
How long should I leave my phone in rice after it fell in the toilet?
Don’t use rice at all. Rinse toilet water off the outside with a little tap water, wipe it dry, then air-dry it with the ports facing down.
Does silica gel work better than rice?
Apple doesn’t recommend any drying agent. Its advice is a dry spot with some airflow, which works without the risk of particles getting into the ports.
My phone works fine. Do I still need to wait?
Yes, before cable charging. A phone can work while water is still in the port, and charging a wet port is what causes corrosion.
